Prof. Philip W Anderson (Princeton)
Nobel laureate, Physics

Few in the history of modern science have had as broad an impact as Phil Anderson. His Nobel prize was awarded for work on solid-state physics, but he also decisively influenced elementary particle physics (the 'Anderson- Higgs boson'), quantum chemistry, and the theory of 'complex systems'. His work on complex networks, including 'glassy' systems, has influenced fields from mathematics all the way to biology and economics.

Anderson has also been a prominent spokesman in the USA, Europe, and Asia, on public policy, and on the way science is done. His article "More is Different', emphasizing 'emergence', had a huge impact on the way science is viewed by scientists, philosophers, and by those determining public policy.
