What is the Pacific Institute of Theoretical Physics, or PITP? PITP is an international research
institute, based in Vancouver, which receives support for
its activities from partners
in a number of different countries. This makes it quite
different from any other scientific research institute in
Canada, and almost unique in the world. It supports
research groups in all areas of theoretical physics, in
the firm belief that theoretical physics is a unified
discipline. The funding is used to support research by
small groups, which can be hosted in the new 'PITP
visitor centre'. It also funds conferences,
workshops, and summer schools in these areas. In
keeping with the international philosophy of PITP, over
half the members of its networks are from outside Canada.
One of the great lessons of the 20th century has been the huge 'spin-off' into the rest of science from activities in theoretical physics- almost all of the revolutionary developments in modern chemistry and biology are a consequence of the theoretical discovery of quantum mechanics. The knock-on effects into modern technology have been even greater. PITP therefore encourages spin-off activities of this kind, and its network members include experimental physicists, quantum chemists, biophysicists, and researchers in hi-tech industry. The activities of PITP are overseen by a distinguished advisory board, drawn from scientists and lay persons around the world.
