Photons as Qubits: Einstein, Bell, and Beyond

Gerard Milburn

University of Queensland
Australian Academy of Sciences

A century ago, Einstein introduced the 'photon' to explain the interaction of light and matter but it took another half century before Glauber developed the consequences for optical physics. Quantum optics is the ideal experimental test-bed for some of the more outlandish predictions of quantum mechanics, including Einstein's "spooky action at a distance". In this talk I will give a brief history of the photon from Einstein to Glauber and Bell, and beyond to new experiments in quantum cryptography, quantum teleportation and quantum computing.
