SUPERSTRINGS: Are they Nature's Ultimate Building Blocks?
Green College Coach House - November 12, 2003

Gordon W. Semenoff

University of British Columbia

Superstring theory offers the possibility of an ultimate unified theory of the fundamental constituents of matter and their interactions. Prof. Semenoff will give us an overview of the way in which string theory manages to reconcile quantum mechanics with gravity as well as the way it influences the current understanding of the behaviour of black holes.  He will also discuss the status of string theory as a scientific theory, particularly as an extension of what is currently known about the physics of elementary particles.
