"Einstein the Philosopher"
Don Howard
Notre Dame
Albert Einstein, the greatest physicist of the 20th century, was also one
of that century's most important philosophers. I will first introduce
Einstein's contributions to the philosophy of science, highlighting his
original and influential views on the logical structure of scientific
theories, the roles of reason and experiment in their validation, and the
heuristics of theory construction and discovery, including the distinctive
role of mathematical simplicity in the pursuit of scientific truth. But I
will also talk about Einstein the moral philosopher, Einstein the
political philosopher, and even Einstein the theologian - the aim being to
both understand and appreciate these lesser known aspects of his thinking,
and to exhibit deep and perhaps surprising connections between his
science, on the one hand, and his theological, moral, and philosophical
interests, on the other.
